Control-Room Simulator

Take the desk. The clock stops at each decision.

Nine shifts at the Balancing Authority, Transmission Operator and Reliability Coordinator desks, in your browser and in the app. You read the displays, decide, and are debriefed against the standards' own clocks. One shift is free.

Inside a shift

How a shift works

You start with a briefing: your company, your desk and the system as it stands, on displays that tag every number as cited from a NERC document, set by your company or RC, or computed by the model. The clock then runs between decisions and stops while you decide. Each shift has 7 or 8 decisions, and every decision is a question a working operator would face: which notification, which action, whose clock is running.

The Control-Room Simulator run console on a desktop: a network display of buses and lines, loading tiles, a trace and an alarm log, and the first decision of the shift with four options, the clock paused
The Control-Room Simulator shift briefing on a phone: Voice paths down, RC desk, with the network display and its tagged numbers
The run console on a desktop, with the clock stopped on the first decision, and a shift briefing on a phone. Screens from the web app.
The top of a Control-Room Simulator debrief: 2 of 7 decisions, a verdict of not yet to standard, and the two obligations missed
The top of a debrief: decisions counted, obligations met or missed, and what the bar is.

A new shift draws new numbers from a seed, so a scenario does not repeat itself. Your credential sets your desk: RC takes the RC desk, BT the BA and TOP desks, TO the TOP desk and BI the BA desk.

The debrief

How it is scored

A shift ends with a debrief, never a percentage. It counts your decisions as best, acceptable, missed or critical, and counts the requirement obligations you met or missed against the standards' own clocks. The verdict is either at standard or not yet at standard, and the bar is set by Grid Prep, not by NERC. Below the verdict you get a timeline of the shift, every decision with the key and its explanation, and the requirements it exercised, so you can go back to the standard and read it.

Free and Full Access

Free in your browser

The demo shift, Voice paths down, is free on the web. It needs no key and no account, and you can run it as often as you like. Full Access, US$24.99 once, opens all nine scenarios, together with every question, unlimited mock exams at exam pace, Smart Review and the Library. Your finished shifts sync with your progress across your browsers.

The iPhone, iPad and Mac app has the simulator too, with its own free shift and its own in-app purchase. A web license doesn't unlock the app, and the in-app purchase doesn't unlock the web.

What it is not

The simulator is a study aid. It is not an approved simulation course, it does not award CEHs, and it does not satisfy the training under PER-005-2 R4. Grid Prep is independent of NERC. Some numbers on the displays are set by your company or RC in real life, so the simulator tags them as such and does not present them as NERC requirements.

Questions

Questions about the simulator

Is the simulator free?

One scenario is. The demo shift, Voice paths down, is free in your browser with no account, as often as you like. Full Access opens all nine.

Does it earn CEHs?

No. Grid Prep is a study aid, not a NERC continuing-education provider, and nothing in it earns CEHs, the simulator included.

Is it on the web and in the app?

Both. The web version runs in any modern browser, including a work PC or a phone. The iPhone, iPad and Mac app has its own copy, with its own purchase.

Which desk do I get?

Your credential sets it: RC takes the RC desk, BT the BA and TOP desks, TO the TOP desk and BI the BA desk.

Does a web license open the app's scenarios?

No. They are separate purchases on separate stores. The web unlocks with a license key, the app with an App Store in-app purchase.
